World’s First Portable Electrostatic Speaker

BenQ, known primarily for high quality monitors and projectors, have released what is thought to be the world's first portable electrostatic speaker, dubbed 'treVolo'.
StereoNET first heard about this new technology through a private preview, prior to the first public demonstration at this years Hi-Fi and AV show in Melbourne.
The treVolo has since had further revisions and refinement, and has been released just in time for Christmas for $399 RRP.
What makes treVolo unique is that electrostatic speakers are generally very large floor standing style speakers. Not so with treVolo, the gurus at BenQ have found a way to incorporate this technology into a small portable device, and it sounds good!
“The treVolo is a world first – it produces a sound quality which rivals professional audio gear, boasting acoustic quality previously only available exclusively in high-end freestanding speakers. Unlike conventional speakers, which are cone shaped, the side-panels, or ‘wings’ as we call them on the treVolo, are exceptionally engineered speakers designed for biodirectional sound projection over a large surface area, which radiates quality audio from every angle for room filling sound.
Music can be streamed directly from a smart device to the speaker wirelessly via Bluetooth or through it, using it as the aptX transmitter to your Hi-Fi stereo system. One single charge will see you enjoying your favourite tunes for up to 12 hours,” Martin Moelle, BenQ Australia's Managing Director told StereoNET.
For added convenience, treVolo can even be used as a speakerphone for answering incoming calls, allowing you to speak directly into the speaker instead of reaching for your phone.
BenQ have even created a convenient BenQ Audio app supporting Android (v4+) / iOS (v7+) which can be downloaded to your device for the best music listening experience. It also offers the added functionality of a number of features, including a playlist creation, battery life check, ambience modes switching, and sleep timer (Android only).
treVolo sets a new standard for portable 'lifestyle' speakers, and the sound quality has to be heard to be believed.
