VIRGIN MEDIA SCORES UK FIRST WITH 4K HDR FRENCH OPEN COVERAGE

Virgin Media has become the first UK TV platform to broadcast an event in 4K Ultra HD (UHD) with High Dynamic Range (HDR) with Eurosport’s coverage of Roland-Garros, a.k.a. The French Open.

UK broadcasters have been trialling HDR content over the past few years but Virgin's French Open coverage marks the first TV broadcast of 4K content in HLG HDR in the UK, pipping the likes of the BBC and Sky to the post.

You will probably be aware of Aunty Beeb’s experimentation with 4K HDR content, most recently the FA Cup Semis and Finals. However, the coverage has been kept to the BBC’s iPlayer on-demand service.

Sky’s implementation of HLG HDR on its Q service was expected in 2018 but was pushed back to later this year.

BT is set to broadcast the Champions League Final between Tottenham and Liverpool in HD HDR on compatible devices, with 4K HDR broadcasts expected before the 2019/2020 Premier League season kicks off.

But it is Virgin Media’s utilisation of Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) technology to broadcast all matches taking place on the renovated Phillipe Chatrier court over the next couple of weeks in 4K UHD with HDR that has won them the bragging rights.

Naturally, to watch Virgin’s coverage, you need to be a Virgin Media customer. You will also need the V6 set-top box and a 4K HDR TV. From there, just press the red button on Eurosport 1HD (channel 521), Eurosport 2HD (channel 522) or Virgin TV Ultra HD (channel 255 or 999) to see the tournament in all its 4K HDR glory.

This event builds on Virgin Media’s partnership with Eurosport which, last summer, enabled tennis fans to watch coverage of Roland Garros in 4K UHD for the first time.

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, told StereoNET:

We are upping our game once more this summer by broadcasting one of the most prestigious tennis competitions in the highest picture quality currently available. Our customers will be able to get even closer to the action with HDR technology on our V6 box, bringing the action right into the homes of our customers.

Are you enjoying the 4K HDR tennis coverage? Let us know.
