Apple seems to be shaking up its audio division. Firstly it updated the brand's AirPods, and now the Apple-owned Beats by Dre has received its first pair of true wireless earbuds, dubbed Powerbeats Pro.

It has been roughly three years since the Powerbeats3 were released, so it is about time a new model was added. It makes sense, then, that the new Powerbeats Pro reflects the latest trend for completely wire-free buds mixed with gym-friendly specs.

Furthermore, Beats claims that the Powerbeats Pro earphones are 23% smaller and 17% lighter than the Powerbeats3. Impressive stuff given that the Powerbeats Pro have a declared 9 hours worth of stamina. Additionally, the Pro's case can deliver another 15 hours of charge. More charge-saving skills are borrowed from the AirPods as the Powerbeats recognise when they're removed from your lugs and then pause playback.

Being Apple-centric, these buds are charged via a Lightning port, although the fruity tie-in does mean that the Powerbeat Pro also sports the same chip as Apple’s newest AirPods: the H1.

Powerbeats Pro features a fully functional, ambidextrous design with the same physical volume and track controls on each earbud. This means full control over your music and phone calls, regardless of whether you're a lefty or a righty.

Luke Wood, president of Beats, told StereoNET:

Powerbeats Pro is a harmonious blend of premium sound, fit and functionality. Powerbeats are already the #1 fitness headphones in the world, and they are now untethered, with all the benefits of the Apple H1 chip. No longer do you have to choose between performance and practicality—it delivers the best on both fronts.

You can have all the tech, but it means nothing if audio output isn't a priority in the design. Beats has wholly re-engineered the Powerbeats from the inside out resulting in an upgraded linear piston driver that leverages an efficient, pressurised airflow to create a powerful acoustic response in a small package. The “enhanced sound quality means incredibly low distortion and great dynamic range across the entire frequency curve.”

As the buds have been built with sporty types in mind, Beats has also tweaked the fitting. So, now you get an entirely new, ergonomically angled acoustic housing that nests comfortably in the concha bowl of the ear with an off-axis nozzle. It comes with four sizes of ear tips and redesigned adjustable earhooks.

The Beats Powerbeats Pro are available in Ivory, Moss, Navy and Black from May for £219.95.
