ONKYO TX-SR393 / TX-SR494 BUDGET DOLBY ATMOS, DTS:X AV RECEIVERS

Onkyo has announced two Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X enabled A/V receivers at an extremely enticing price point - the 5.2-ch TX-SR393 (155W/Ch) and 7.2-ch TX-SR494 (160W/Ch).

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks are mixed in a 3D domain for realistic cinematographic audio. Onkyo's new TX-SR393 offers a space-saving 3.2.2-channel solution for native Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, while the TX-SR494 expands object-based audio playback through 5.2.2 channels.

The amplifiers may be budget-friendly, but they boast two neat features - Dolby Atmos Height Virtualiser (to be enabled via a future firmware update) and DTS Virtual: X. Both technologies claim to create 3D virtual surround and height effects for systems that lack multiple speakers.

Additionally, Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing technologies allow legacy soundtracks to be played through any speaker layout, including those with height channels, too.

The new TX-SRs are fitted with four HDMI inputs and one ARC-compatible output with passthrough for 4K/60p and a variety of HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG.

The swish user interface now possesses a new on-screen display that shows you audio and video data including the HDR format, video resolution, frame rate and audio codec attached to the incoming signal.

There's also Onkyo's AccuEQ Room Acoustic Calibration technology, optical and coaxial digital inputs, a selection of analogue inputs and Bluetooth connectivity. Also, Onkyo states that the new amps are good for music playback, mainly thanks to the Advanced Music Optimizer which, we are told, restores compressed audio files pretty much back to their original integrity for improved quality.

Several new features debut on the TX-SR393 and TX-SR494, including a user-selectable Vocal Enhancer mode that can be used to raise or lower vocal frequencies. A Zone B line-out allows the passing of inputted audio to any component with an analogue RCA audio input.

Price and availability

The Onkyo TX-SR393 3.2.2-ch A/V receiver with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is available from March 2019 in black or silver for £349.99.
